What are you reading the week of Sunday, May 3, 2015?

I just picked up Sugar by Bernice L. McFadden at Barnes and Noble but haven't started reading it yet. Hope it's good!

6. Shenmue, did you read "The Dinosaur Feather" by S.J. Gazan before "The Arc of the Swallow"?

Does it matter?

Those sure sound good. I like creepy.

2. Just finished "Shots Fired" by C.J. Box.

It's a collection of short stories, most of them set in the contemporary West, some of them featuring Box's most familiar character, Wyoming Game Warden Joe Pickett. Special mention of the story entitled "Blood Knot"---all 5 pages and 1000 words of it. It's been a while since a story's ending made me gasp, but this one did it for me.

Joe Pickett's in four stories or so, and Nate the falconer is in one......

The Joe Pickett character and location seem familiar to me. I must have read at least one book a while back. Anyway, I ordered a used copy of the first one. Even if I read it before I think it would appeal to Mrs. Enthusiast.

Blood Knot sounds good. Wow! All of five pages! Our list is growing loooong.

I believe he has a brand new Joe Pickett novel out, which I'll have to reserve at the library. Box captures the contemporary American West as well as anybody writing today; his books are wildly popular in places like Denver. Joe Pickett is a great protagonist, because he always insists on doing the right thing---even if it gets him in loads of trouble.

I loved "Blood Knot," because of the beautiful, concise writing and the subject matter. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. As to the other short stories in the collection, "Antelopes of the Third Reich" is worthwhile, just for the title alone (and its grounding in historical fact).

I don't know how the hell Box came across the historical background for the story, but it's worth reading. And like Box says in the forward of the book: No fair looking at the last page of the story!

Last week I read Hypothermia by Arnaldur Indridason. Now I'm reading Strange Shores by Arnaldur Indridason.

Last Sunday I reported that I was starting Two Old Women by Velma Wallis. Before I started Two Old Women the library got in Strange Shores so I started that one instead.

Last week Mrs. Enthusiast read At Play in the Fields of the Lord by Peter Matthiessen. She was really taken by that book. I'm looking forward to reading it too. After At Play in the Fields of the Lord she read Two Old Women by Velma Wallis. Now she is reading The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt.

RIP. I try to always read something by an author who passes, out of some respect I guess. My local sad little library only had 2 of her prolific writings. And both in large print. I've read some large print books before and they seem to have a lot of typos, but I have no proof of that.

Anyways, I'm reading Live Flesh. Speaking of creepy. She really gets into the psycho's head. Good place descriptions. I can see them in my mind.

I expect I'll finish that one in a few days so I also got Spirit of Steamboat, a Walt Longmire story by Craig Johnson that just recently arrived. I read all the Longmire mysteries last fall and really enjoyed them, in spite of not really being a fan of Westerns. They changed my mind about that, somewhat. And that is a foreshadowing of a book I hope to be receiving soon that has been on my must read list for many years.

Meanwhile, reading all the posts here, my must read list just keeps growing. Thank you all for sharing.
