Matt Cain pitched a one-hit complete home opener for the Giants

5-0 over the Pirates.

Giants or not, a one-hit home opener is news.

On edit: Cain faced one batter over the minimum. Struck out 11 and walked none. An outstanding performance.

Too bad Matt couldn't have gotten the no hitter..just a marvelous effort. He had the stats people working:

Cain is the first NL pitcher to throw a 1 hitter in his team's home opener since Hippo Vaughn for the Cubs in 1918.

Last time a pitcher's hit was the only blemish on an otherwise perfect game was former Giant Bob Knepper's triple off Jimmy Jones and San Diego in 1986 while he was pitching for Houston..

Last time a Giants pitcher threw a one-hitter, and opposing pitcher got the only hit, was Hal Schumacher in 1935 vs. the Phillies and Orville Jorgens.
