Related: About this forum49ers break ground on new Santa Clara Stadium...
April 19, 2012 will go down as one of the most significant dates in the illustrious history of the San Francisco 49ers and in Bay Area sports lore as we know it.
On top of its five Super Bowl Championships, the franchise rolled out a large red carpet to celebrate co-chairs Dr. John and Denise DeBartolo York along with their son, CEO Jed York, and Santa Clara city officials digging gold shovels into a mound of red dirt to signify the franchise breaking ground on a New Santa Clara Stadium site.
At the exact spot of the stadiums 50-yard line, the York family and city officials broke ground on the stadium site officially bringing the 49ers to the South Bay for their new home on Sundays.
I think its a testament to everybody thats worked on this project, said York. Its a statement that this is the first professional football stadium to be built in California in over 50 years.

I never thought this would happen...the 49ers getting a new stadium. It's sort of a shame they had to move out of SF to get things done..but the city made their bed..and now the 49ers will be playing in a new stadium in Santa Clara starting hopefully by the 2014 season..
Oh, the 49ers have also put in a bid to host Super Bowl L...a new stadium will bring a SB to the Bay Area soon enough..

It's is definitely seen it's better days.
Been to the new Baseball park--- fucking awesome place---I only wish it existed when I lived in SF in the eighties.
I actually went to more Oakland A games while living there because it was easier to get to--- on BART--- take you right to the door.

(31,156 posts)how this stadium was designed to be different than any other NFL football stadium and how they wanted to set the standard for all future construction.
If that vision included pricing out long-time season ticket holders they've done a great job.

(10,893 posts)but I kinda empathize with the people who live in SF over seeing their team move to a different town. I know it's all business, but I still think it's messed up because SF is their original home, not Santa Clara. And once they move, fans who live in SF have to drive an additional fifty or so miles to see them. It's almost the same with how Lew Wolff is trying to jump ship and move the A's to San Jose. That's why less people in Oakland want to attend A's games anymore.

(9,709 posts)You guys are a rare breed. Look, the 49ers tried to stay in SF, but the city wasn't interested in accommodating them. Much of the fan base is from the South Bay and Peninsula. Plus the 49ers offices and training facilities are already in Santa Clara..actually, the move makes perfect sense.
Btw, less people attend A's games because you have a crappy product playing in a crappy old stadium. Thing is, the A's have never drawn well...even back in the 70's during their 3 consecutive WS titles run, they had trouble attracting fans.
The A's need to put a competitive team on the field, stop blaming the Giants for their problems, stop hassling over territorial rights and move to Sacramento or somewhere...

(31,156 posts)San Francisco lacked the leadership to get a deal done. Voters in San Francisco were accommodating, and as you say, the 49ers would have stayed. Ass-hat mayor Gavin Newsome fumbled the ball.
