They referred to it as a "called thrid stike walkoff". Looked pretty outside to me, though.

Also, if it was a dropped third stike, wouldn't that be an error.

But the play is as old as baseball.

It is when any hit, walk, hit-by-pitch, wild pitch, balk or error in the bottom of the ninth (or later inning) wins the game. I consider only the batting team to have the ability to "walk off". But some think it also applies to the team in the field when they make the final out.

at least by the umpires. Check swing that went through. The catcher dropped the ball and had to throw to first to make it an out. He did. But the batter could have made it to first if he hadn't thought it was a ball.

I found the same thing. A dropped third strike is not an error as long as the put out is made at first base.

I looked up passed ball and wild pitch too. Nice nugget i found there. If a ball gets by the catcher and a runner attempts to get to the next base and gets thrown out, it's still a passed ball or wild pitch if the putout had to be made at a base not occupied at the beginning of the play.

So, someone would get charged with the error (WP or PB) even though a putout was made. Just found that an interesting factoid.

This game could not be televised anywhere because of the stupid Fox Saturday monopoly blackout. They did cut away from their other game to show the last inning, but I wonder how many White Sox fans weren't even tuned in.

The primary victim in all of this was one Felix Doubront, a 24-year-old lefty from Venezuela, who pitched six innings of better-than-solid baseball for the Red Sox, striking out seven and leaving in the sixth inning, having thrown only 99 pitches, with a 9-1 lead. (Doubront gave up Teixeira's first home run, which, at that point, looked completely harmless.) By all statistical measures, it was the best game of Doubront's career. He then went back to the clubhouse, showered, iced down, sat on a sofa, and watched the roof cave in.

"I didn't see the [seven-run] seventh, because they were showing the guy in Chicago who was pitching the perfect game," Doubront said. "But I saw all the rest of it. I mean, what are you going to do? These things happen. This is baseball. I deserved better. I know that, but I'm with my team. I feel good because I pitched well, but I don't feel good because we lost, and the way we lost. You feel like, you know, when you pitch well and come out, that's my game. That's the way you feel."

for that 7 run Yankee inning to be preempted.

When they returned, the announcer said, "you aren't going to believe what happened."

In between came the reading of the Late Show's Top 10 list, taped at the Coliseum, and a call from the White Sox first fan.

"It definitely is an honor to speak to him," said Humber of his Monday call from President Obama. "He just wanted to congratulate me. He even asked about Kristan and the baby and asked about how that was going.

"He shared some of his experience of being a new father. He's a very nice man and he represents our country in a good way. He's definitely a great communicator and I appreciate him talking to me."
