Related: About this forumMore overrated coach: Rex Ryan or Rob Ryan?
Seriously both of these guys are supposed to be be defensive geniuses but both have been less than impressive. And of course both of them yap which doesn't help..
I sat down this morning to post the same exact thing.
My title was going to be-- Are the Ryan Brothers over-inflated?
I think they're just like their Dad, Buddy.
All Hat and no Cattle.
Although Buddy was a great D coach but horrible Head Coach.

(64,986 posts). . .the Bears lost to Miami in '85. His insistence on staying with one defense against a guy with Marino's release and those little quick receivers, when it was obvious the Dolphins couldn't stop the Bears' offense, cost them the game.
I think he was all hat and no cattle even as a D coordinator.

(64,931 posts)I remember a couple of years ago, they spent far more time showing Dick LeBeau than the actual coach of the Steelers. Don't forget the Eagles D-coach who passed away a year or two ago from cancer (can't recall his name- Johnson maybe??)

(13,178 posts)The Packers are 15-1 in spite of the defense, not that you'd know that listening to the pundits. Capers has talent down to the third-string level, yet can't craft a defense to save his life.

(7,429 posts)I really think they are both over-rated. Why in the world do I need to see Rob Ryan on the sideline?? I know someone else mentioned it before, but why is it that Rob Ryan is the only Defensive Coach we ever see on the sideline?? Because the Tweedles are just so darn cute??
I see the resemblance now

(41,692 posts)Almost like panning to Tebow the whole game.
They try and make a story line with these guys, problem is...they are horrible.
I could have thrown on Ryan's defense yesterday.
I know some casual football fans who have thought that Rob Ryan was the head coach of the Cowboys because they show him so much. I almost feel sorry for Jason Garrett.

First, Rex with the NY Jets, then Rob with the Dallas Cowboys.

(56,177 posts)The Cowpies defense isn't getting better, the whole Jets team isn't getting better...have they worn out their welcome or do they get one more year to turn it around?

(64,931 posts)He did bring a sense of excitement after the Wade Phillips era. Though, unfortunately, there was not much discipline with that exuberance. The question is will Jason Garrett take control like he did after replacing phillips?

(29,149 posts)He has led some good defenses both in college and in the NFL. I'm not sold on him as a head coach, but as a coordinator he's done some good work. His defenses in Baltimore were stout, even when the team as a whole wasn't good. The team had a losing record two of the three years he was a coordinator, but the defenses were always in the top 6 in yards allowed.
I guess Rob had some good defenses when he was a college coordinator at Oklahoma State, but the defenses he's been in charge of in the NFL haven't been impressive.
I was never a fan of Buddy Ryan, either.

(29,322 posts)but 2 years ago they lead the league in defensive YPA and rush defense as well as being in the top 5 in defensive YPA last year. This season they're tied for #5. I'd be happy if my team had defensive success like that, hell I'm satisfied they're having the defensive success that they are this season.
I don't know much about Rob Ryan except for the fact that he improved the Cleveland defense(not to a top 10 D) but I'm not sure how highly he is rated to be overrated to begin with.

(41,692 posts)My team, the Phins, have an excellent defense, with a great run stop line.
They were 7-9 this year.
Defense don't win football games anymore.
Bank on it---if Rex and his big mouth go 8-8 again next season...bye bye.

(29,322 posts)I should have clarified after the Baltimore game is where I was impressed with their D. They really came together and I chalk that up to having a new D-Coordinator with a very short offseason. By the time they learned Ray Horton's defense they really took it to teams. Seasonal stats for the Cards don't show this but they managed to tie for #10 in defensive YPA.
As far as how the Jets will do next year, I have no idea. I don't know what free agents they will bring in and lose, who they will draft, etc. The only thing that has my doubting their success is Mark Sanchez, I cut young QBs a lot of slack but he needs to start showing me something. He actually downgraded this year rather than improved.
