Polians out - what about Peyton?

Colts vice chairman Bill Polian and general manager Chris Polian are out in Indianapolis, a source told ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen.

A Colts spokesman had no comment on the report and said there would be a news conference at 5 p.m. ET.

The Colts (2-14) finished with fewer than three wins for only the second time since moving to Indianapolis in 1984, and fans have been calling for the ouster of the Polians and coach Jim Caldwell.

Polian joined the Colts in 1998. During his time with the team the Colts went to the postseason 10 times and played in two Super Bowls, winning one by beating the Chicago Bears in Super Bowl XLI.

Peyton Manning missed the entire season because of neck surgery. Without its franchise quarterback, Indianapolis' streak of eight straight postseason appearances ended with a thud.

It seems likely that Caldwell will go as well. I think the Colts are going to draft Luck and part ways with Peyton. Peyton and his dad seem to believe a number one pick has to start, so something has to give. Somebody on one of the shows yesterday said the Jets are interested.

They should probably go for him anyway. Renew Deal Jan 2012 #7
This season might be the best example as to why Peyton is a HOF QB. hughee99 Jan 2012 #8

Luck is likely the most pro-ready college QB out there, but it's still a huge difference playing in the NFL. What he could learn from Manning is invaluable -- not just for the Colts but for Luck. Keep Peyton if at all possible.

I'm not saying that, Auggie, but I heard that is how the Mannings' feel about it. With the Colts making changes at the top of their organisation, it just appears that there must have been a disagreement on how to proceed. The Polians came in with Peyton, so it is my guess that they wanted to continue with Peyton out of loyalty, and either trade the pick or use it on some one other than Luck.

Manning, 35, signed a five-year contract in July. Doesn't seem like a smart decision by the Colts. Not now.

I agree -- If Peyton's career is indeed over, I hope he decides to do exactly that. The Polian's replacements might offer him a special coaching position.

If there's no improvement in his neck by the NFL draft in March, the Colts will have no choice but to go for Andrew Luck. A shame, because Peyton has been one of the NFL's classier acts.
