Can the Ravens stop San Francisco and the Pistol offense?

Baltimore Sun / 1-27-13

"Certain players have to play well because this offense puts pressure on them," (Cincinnati Bengals coach Marvin) Lewis said. "The defensive ends have to play the dive back and then the inside linebacker has to scrape out and play the hole. Then you might have a cornerback or safety play the quarterback or one of them might be the alley guy. Regardless, you have to know your assignment and stay with it. Your eyes are extremely important."

When the Ravens faced this offense against Washington this season, they allowed 359 yards of total offense, including 186 rushing. But most of the damage came in the Redskins' first two possessions.

"The Wildcat was a component of an offense, another form of attacking a defense," (Jacksonville's linebackers coach Mark) Duffner said. "It was just built around the running back. This is an offense that features your quarterback, running back and receivers. I think it has more shelf life than the Wildcat."

Added Lewis: "It's here and now I think you will see more defensive coordinators spend more time during the offseason working on it and getting more players on board as far as stopping it. Once that happens, I think it will go the way of the run-and-shoot. Plus, I'm not sure everybody wants to see their quarterback take the beatings every week."

Key, I think, is if the Ravens can take Kaepernick out of the game, or rattle him at least with consistent pressure. Only the Seahawks were able to do that, but that was several games ago and in Seattle. Roman and Harbaugh have had time to adjust the game plan since then. And Kaepernick has yet to take a beating.

Good storyline developing here.

but at the cost of leaving people open all day.

Not a bad strategy, actually: make the second-year guy beat you with his arm. Except that he does.
