Another WTF moment in College Football: 2012 Stanford/Cal game moved to October

San Francisco Chronicle / 1-5-12

Background: Pac-12 A.D.s moved the traditional "Big Game" between Stanford and Cal from a requested November 17th date to October 20th. Reason? Neither Stanford nor Cal wanted to play the game over the Thanksgiving holiday (the 24th) and the 30th was already reserved for the Pac-12 Championship. But no reason was provided why the 17th was not viable, at least not in the article below...

"Cal and Stanford were clear that they did not want to play the Big Game Thanksgiving week, so we presented additional options," Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott said. "The Pac- 12 Conference values the importance of our historic rivalry games and the importance of scheduling them on traditional end-of-season dates."

Scott explained that the Pac-12 Championship game scheduled for Nov. 30 and priorities related to the conference's new television agreement starting in 2012 "mean occasional date adjustments to rivalry games."

Aha... the new television agreement. Stanford vs. Oregon on the 17th might be better for ratings. Give us the truth and cut the bullshit, okay?

More from Pac-12.org:

WALNUT CREEK, CALIF. – The Pac-12 Conference has released its 2012 football schedule, which will feature every game on national television for the first time in Conference history, it was announced today.

With the new ESPN and FOX media rights agreement as well as the launch of the Pac-12 Networks in August, every Pac-12 football game will be available to fans on a national clearance, eliminating regional distribution which was prevalent in the prior broadcast arrangements. There will be 44 games on the combination of ESPN’s family of networks, Fox Broadcast and FX, while 34 games are scheduled to air on the Pac-12 Networks. Exact broadcast schedules will be determined at a later date. The new schedule will also include eight Thursday and Friday specialty dates for ESPN and FOX. Dates during the first two weeks of the non-conference schedule are still being adjusted to accommodate television commitments, but the remainder of the schedule is set.

“The one thing we heard loud and clear from fans across the Conference is they want to see their teams play every week,” Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott said. “Starting in 2012 fans can see all games throughout the country."

Weeknight games too .. great for ratings, but no word on the hardships this causes students and students athletes. More bullshit.
