Related: About this forumThe Hall of Fame Game is as bad as the Pro Bowl
Quarterback Tony Romo will not play in Sundays Hall of Fame game.
Hes not alone.
A large number of starters were informed by Cowboys coaches last night that they will not take the field against the Miami Dolphins in the NFLs pre-season opener. Their first action will come one week from today on Aug. 9 against the Oakland Raiders.
So, why did the Cowboys lobby for an additional pre-season game only to keep the majority of their key players on the sideline? The club values the additional practice time that comes from opening training camp early more than the fifth game itself.
In fact, it can be argued that fifth game is actually more important for the coaching staff as they work through the mechanics of calling offensive and defensive plays from the booth, something they have not done in previous seasons.

GOOD....no reason we should have 5 PRE SEASON GAMES other then cause grandpa jerry wants to make more $...Sit all the starters for the first pre season game...maybe even the 2nd one too...

exactly; our jock sniffer of an owner, who thinks his a NFL GM, would rather market the team nationally, than protect the players from unnecessary injuries sustained in one more meaningless exhibition.

So when the miserable Dolphins beat them, they will have an excuse.

(47,534 posts)1. They should just designate a regular season game as the Hall of Fame Game.

(20,365 posts)2. Then they'd have to change the date of the Hall of Fame Ceremony.
Having it during the season would prevent many NFLers from attending.
Maybe make it a Monday game in the first preseason week and not an extra preseason game.
Iggo
(47,534 posts)3. Then don't have a game at all.
Nothing worse than celebrating the best in the game by putting on the worst kind of game the sport has to offer.

(31,130 posts)4. Coaches say two preseason games are enough to prepare a team
Of course, if they shorten preseason that opens the door for lengthening regular season by two games, something the players' association does not necessarily support.
No one would miss The Hall of Fame Game.

NFL teams used to play 6 or 7 pre-season games.
