US Open Draw sets up possible '12 rematch

NEW YORK -- Defending champion Andy Murray could face top-seeded Novak Djokovic in the U.S. Open semifinals, according to the draw for the tournament which came out Thursday.

Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer -- who have never played each other at Flushing Meadows -- might meet in the quarterfinals.

Thursday's draw for the year's last Grand Slam tournament also set up these possible men's quarterfinals: 2011 champion Djokovic vs. 2009 champion Juan Martin del Potro, No. 3 Murray vs. No. 5 Tomas Berdych, and No. 4 David Ferrer vs. No. 8 Richard Gasquet.

The potential women's quarterfinals are No. 1 Serena Williams against No. 8 Angelique Kerber, No. 2 Victoria Azarenka against No. 7 Petra Kvitova, No. 3 Agnieszka Radwanska against No. 5 Li Na, and No. 4 Sara Errani against No. 6 Caroline Wozniacki.

I actually think the women's draw is beginning to look a lot better than it has in a few years. There are several of those mentioned I would not mind seeing win this thing. Wozniacki is NOT one of them.

It would be good to see Del make it here. Of course as always, Federer will be my number one pick. Djokovic is OK but would be very happy to see Ferrer finally make it.

Looking forward to it. Really lucked out with auditions and a musical to do, there are only a few nights I will not be able to watch.

Aug 2013

I guess I never knew.

I just got tired of watching him pick his big boy pants out of his crack and all his little oddities, setting up his bottles just so and all that. I know that is a big part of some people's game but wow, it has only gotten worse. I think it was Wimbledon they showed a tape of him years ago contrasted with a tape of him now and it was remarkable.

Then there is the Bartoli need to touch her racquet to the backstop after every point.

Still, I don't care for Rafa's game or all that other stuff but I don't see that that does not make him decent? I must have missed a huge thing.

but then I really don't know all that much about sports and doping etc.

At first he was fun to watch and seemed a nice kid with a nice family that he was devoted to. You know, the kind of story that an old Mom like me would like He has changed but he has aged too. Fed has stayed classy almost consistently since the time his Dad shoved him into the snow bank, or so the story goes.

Have you been watching? The day time coverage is very different, it is odd. It is quiet during the women's matches. Always a quiet man and a British woman so far and I don't ever hear who they are but they go for long stretches of time without uttering a word. Now in some ways I like that but it is just a major difference all of a sudden. Also the things they say just seem different and odd, they go from saying so and so is not doing well then if they pull it out they go to the "See I told you they were the best hope for womens tennis"? Perhaps it is just me but it feels all wrong.

Still the coverage seems to be all over the place even with the ESPN deal with the DirecTV with all the choices. They were done early yesterday with the coverage and cut out Ferrers match and I never did see it anywhere. Why can't they just stop the coverage hopping? Grrrr.

Hoping for Fed but he can't last forever so waiting for someone to really feel like getting behind. Del Potro might be it, I do like him. My other favorites are either too old to last much longer or not terribly good but fun to watch. Oh well.

Waiting for the women to sort themselves out a little more. I think I really like Radwanska the elder, is it Agga they call her? I want to like Sloane Stevens but she is pretty inconsistent stlll. Watching and waiting.

Tennis talk, I love it and you, Joey, have been my constant tennis companion here for a long time. I always enjoy it.

What you describe sounds irritating...way back when, this was in 1983, I was in France during Wimbledon, and caught some of the matches on television...the commentators went for AGES without commentating...it was very refreshing, because here they feel obligated to say something after every single point, and usually what they say adds nothing to your knowledge of the game.

I like Radwanska also, keep hoping she'll break through...I agree about Sloane, too, she seems nice, but the inconsistecy kills me...I espcially like that she doesn't like Serena...no one seems to. Did you see Francesca hug the ballboy during her match with Serena yesterday...I've always liked her, and as she did it, I thought, boy, Serena would never do that.

Glad Roger won today, but I don't hold out much hope. You and I and TBF also like Juan Martin...really thought he could beat Djoker at Wimbledon...too bad, because he might have beaten Murray had he gotten by him.

I actually enjoy some of the banter. I love when Martina is there, Chris Evert was on last night and that was great. I miss Mary Carillo, I always loved her coverage. Some of the guys get a little out of hand at times, they have fun and then there is McEnroe who I actually don't mind listening to part of the time and the rest of the time I want to strangle him, lol. See, you just can't please me. It is just so different than it ever has been. I think the night matches will probably be much the same as always but the daytime matches are very quiet.

I did see her hug him! I love her, always have. What a scrapper and a good one at that. I wanted her to win but there was no way, not the way Serena was playing. I think we will have to see her around for a good while more. I certainly respect her skill but I do like her sister much better.

My hope is anyone but Nadal, Djoker (although I do not dislike him) or Murray. I saw where TBF said Milos was a cheater? Wow, another story I have missed. I did not care for him much anyway.

OK, I am going to say it even though I know it is not going to happen......I want Ferrer to win. I know, still I want him to win. Delpo would be my next choice. I hope he is feeling well and healthy!

I did not know that Sloane did not like Serena, is it about Serena's boyfriend? I do remember there was some major flap over that last year. I also remember hearing something about Sloane then, was that it?

Wed Aug 28, 2013, 11:14 AM

I have seen really great players call points for their opponents rather than cheat. Once I saw Agassi in a high stakes match before all this instant replay argue that the ball his opponent hit was in and the point was for his opponent. I wish I remembered when that was or who it was but I don't. Patrick Rafter did that once that I recall and several others over the years before all the challenges and instant replays.

Cheating, man that is horrible to hear that anyone would do that. Especially when they had to know that everyone else saw it. Have we really gotten so bad that one would think that nobody would care about that?

I always thought he had a bit of an attitude but was not holding that against him. Now I think I will, I have never liked cheaters, especially one's who think they can get away with it even when observed by others and seen on video. Creep.

about not wanting to work hard when he was younger so he quit or else his coach left him high and dry so he worked construction and decided to go back to tennis. That was when his coach started making him do all the really hard stuff like running home after his matches. It paid off, he is one tough guy out there. He does always play his heart out and anyone who reads a lot and keeps his books is someone I can relate to!

He was my go to after Fabrice retired. Love the little guys who gut out these matches and play for the win.

John Isner 'disappointed' fans rooted for opponent

NEW YORK (AP) — An American man playing at the American Grand Slam tournament, John Isner found it hard to believe so many U.S. Open spectators were cheering so vigorously for his French opponent, Gael Monfils.

They clapped rhythmically while chanting, "Let's go, Monfils!" They loudly sang his last name between points. They rose to their feet and raucously saluted Monfils' best shots. They applauded faults and other miscues by the 13th-seeded Isner, the highest-ranked U.S. man, who eventually pulled out a 7-5, 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (4) victory Thursday night.

"I was a little bit disappointed in that, actually. Not going to sugarcoat it," said Isner, who reached the third round at Flushing Meadows for the fifth consecutive year. "If I was playing in France, it certainly wouldn't be like that."

From late in the third set, spectators at Louis Armstrong Stadium really began backing Monfils.

"It was surprising, actually," Monfils said. "It was surprising — but it was good."

Certainly was an unusual display during a match involving a U.S. player at the most important tennis tournament in the United States. Maybe, as Monfils guessed afterward, the ticket-holders simply wanted more bang for their buck, instead of a three-set, open-and-shut affair. Or maybe, as Isner surmised, Monfils' style just won them over.

"He's a very fun-loving guy, and he gets cheered on wherever he goes, not just in France. He's one of the most exciting tennis players in the world, hands down," Isner said. "He's been fighting a bunch of injuries, so it's good to see him back healthy."

Monfils is most decidedly a showman, one of the most gregarious and demonstrative players on tour, one who plays to the crowd and sometimes seems more interested in being an entertainer than a winner. He's been ranked as high as No. 7, and reached the semifinals at his home major, the French Open, in 2008. But he also has been slowed by injuries, and skipped Wimbledon this year.

Monfils is a huge fan favorite when he's healthy. We look for him especially at the French. The guy is really funny

Contrast that to the boring and methodical big serve (with almost nothing else going for him) of Isner. The American men just aren't very exciting at this point. I do look for Ryan Harrison when I think of Americans - but sadly with the open he met Rafa first round so that was the end of his run. Also hoping Jack Sock would be better ... it has been a drought for sure since Agassi.
