Earlier this week, 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh called Packers linebacker Clay Matthews late hit on quarterback Colin Kaepernick a cheap shot and that Matthews would have to work on repairing his image as a tough guy for slapping 49ers tackle Joe Staley during an ensuing scuffle.
Matthews met the media on Thursday and got the expected questions about his thoughts regarding Harbaughs comments. Matthews avoided most of them by saying he only wanted to answer questions about this weeks game against Washington, but eventually broke down and gave a little bit more.
Im an awesome player, Im not a dirty player, Matthews said.
Matthews cited his pretty good resume when it came to league discipline to back up his belief and wouldnt say whether hed been fined by the league office, which confirms all the fines of the week on Friday. It would be a surprise if Matthews name wasnt on the list, the hit was a flagrant foul whether Matthews is a dirty player or not, which would mark the third time in his career that hes received a fine.

(32,050 posts)Green Bay Packers linebacker Clay Matthews has been fined $15,000 for his Week 1 hit on San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, NFL Media's Albert Breer reported Friday.
Matthews plans to appeal the fine, Breer added, via a source who has spoken with the player.
In the second quarter of Sunday's loss to the 49ers, Matthews hit Kaepernick well after the San Francisco passer went out of bounds on a third-down play, setting off a scuffle between the teams. Matthews was flagged for a personal foul, but Niners left tackle Joe Staley had an offsetting unsportsmanlike-conduct penalty on the play.
