High school English teacher had a phrase for those who live in the US, but don't know football--not necessarily like and watch--but don't know it, aren't aware of the main things going on.

It basically "culturally illiterate." She included knowing literature, movies, TV, music--classical and popular, art and anything else that a large portion of the populace enjoyed or found important, whether it was your cup of tea or not. And her opinion was if discussion strayed into an area you didn't know, just shut the hell up and don't complain. It will cycle back to your domain eventually.
