Bill Belichick: Wes Welker's block was 'deliberate'

Bill Belichick: Wes Welker's block was 'deliberate'

The typically tight-lipped Bill Belichick didn't hold back Monday when asked about the performance of Denver Broncos receiver Wes Welker.

Welker, the former Patriots pass-catcher, laid a vicious block on Aqib Talib in Sunday's AFC title game that sent the New England cornerback to the locker room and out of the contest for good.

"One of the worst plays I've seen," Belichick said. "It was a deliberate play by the receiver to take out Aqib. No attempt to get open.

"Look, I'm not saying he learned it from Fox. Fox is a good coach, a good guy. Maybe Welker learned it from a previous coach. Maybe the coach he had before Fox. It's possible. But that behavior should have stopped as soon as he started playing for a non-Patriots team."

The Pats run it, the Broncos run it, Miami ran it when Welker was there. Everyone runs it. Sometimes they call it, sometimes they don't. I don't think Welker's intention was to hurt Talib, but I don't think he accidentally ran into him either. It's interesting that Belichick chose to comment on that since he usually has a habit of not saying anything about ANYTHING at his press conferences, and to comment on something so routine in the NFL is very strange for him.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Welker in another city next year. He's a very expensive 3rd or 4th option for the Broncos who may find that money can be better spent elsewhere, especially given his salary next season, and the fact that his replacement played very well while he was out. I guess we won't be seeing him back in NE, though.
