1.e4 Nc6

  • The conventional name for this move is the Nimzovich Defense. It usually leads to a transposition.

2.Nf3 d5

  • Magnus employs good opening principles by using a pawn to get a foothold in the center.

3.Bd3 Nf6 4.exd5 Qxd5!?

  • Magnus brings his Queen into the fray too early. Better is 4...Nxd5.

5.Nc3!

  • White shows he knows how to take advantage of such liberties.

5...Qh5 6.0-0 Bg4

  • Magnus begins setting up a kingside attack.

7.h3 Ne5?!

  • There are two kinds of sacrifices: sound ones and mine --Mikhail Tal.
  • This is a Tal sacrcrifice, and not very subtle. Magnus continues with his planned kingside attack.

8.hxg4 Nfxg4 9.Nxe5??

  • Bill Gates shows he can do what many other of the most powerful business executives on the planet can do: blunder. At least this didn't crash the world economy.

9...Qh2# 0-1

  • That's all, folks!
