Drought ? Rain stops play at AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am

PEBBLE BEACH -- Rain and gusty wind temporarily forced suspension of first-round play less than an hour after the start of the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am Thursday on all three Monterey Peninsula courses.

Just 36 of the 156 pros managed to start their rounds with their amateur partners before the PGA Tour called all players in from the course at 8:39 a.m. in the wake of scattered thunderstorm reports in the Pebble Beach area. Only one foursome managed to get in as many as three holes.

Forecasts call for scattered showers and wind through mid-afternoon and it was uncertain if and when the opening round would be resumed. The AT&T hasn't had a rain-out since the final round of the 2009 event, which made Dustin Johnson a 54-hole winner.

Pebble Beach Company (PBC) is the sole fiscal sponsor of a $67M Wastewater Reclamation Project, which converts locally generated wastewater to high-quality recycled water suitable for irrigating the world-renowned golf courses of the Del Monte Forest. The ReclamationProject has also vastly reduced the amount of treated wastewater that previously had been discharged into Carmel Bay, and thus has contributed to the improvement of ocean water quality in this area. Furthermore, the Project provides reclaimed water to meet 100% of the irrigation needs of all of the golf courses in the Del Monte Forest (Pebble Beach Golf Links, Spyglass Hill Golf Course, The Links at Spanish Bay, Peter Hay Golf Course, Cypress Point, Monterey Peninsula Country Club, and Poppy Hills), thus eliminating potable water usage–saving over 4 billion gallons of potable water for our community to date!

and that's great. But California still needs mega amounts of rain. Very few in these parts would mind if the tournament was a total washout.

But don't count me among those wanting a tournament washout, especially if Velveeta Blockhead, Aaron Rodgers makes the cut.
