AHL goaltender prevents 2-on-0 by knocking off net

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nhl-puck-daddy/ahl-goaltender-prevents-2-on-0-by-knocking-off-net--video-214958707.html

You have to give Bridgeport Sound Tigers goaltender David Leggio props for playing hockey from a mathematical perspective.

In a game against the Springfield Falcons, Leggio's opponents sprinted down the ice on a 2-on-0. So Leggio decided his best chance to stop the play was to knock the net off its moorings and deal with a penalty shot.

As you can see at the end of the video, the move actually worked as Leggio stopped the ensuing penalty shot.

According to ctpost.com, Leggio believed he had a greater opportunity to make a save on a breakaway than a 2-on-0.

I wish Bridgeport had had an AHL team when I was growing up there.

Of course, one would have to figure out the rules for something like that... but obviously it's a lot easier to stop one guy than two!

Given the actual rules they call was correct, of course.

The rule should be changed to prevent this by awading 2 penalty shots. Since penalty shots are made >50% of the time the odds that knocking the net off the pins would actually stop a goal being scored become very low and there is some reasonable chance that such an action results in 2 goals.

That would stop it.

I think the ref could have called two penalties on that, delay and unsportsmanlike conduct. Knocking the net off is certainly both a delay and an unsportsmanlike act. A penalty shot plus a power play might also be sufficient deterrent, though less than the deterrent of two penalty shots.

And, with the goalie in the penalty box, the reserve goalie, who has little time to warm up, has to face the power play.

That's pretty good!

Usually goalies do not serve their own penalties. And I suppose sometimes a team might be sitting their #1 goalie, in which case this might help them out!
