http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nhl-puck-daddy/ahl-goaltender-prevents-2-on-0-by-knocking-off-net--video-214958707.htmlIn a game against the Springfield Falcons, Leggio's opponents sprinted down the ice on a 2-on-0. So Leggio decided his best chance to stop the play was to knock the net off its moorings and deal with a penalty shot.
As you can see at the end of the video, the move actually worked as Leggio stopped the ensuing penalty shot.
According to ctpost.com, Leggio believed he had a greater opportunity to make a save on a breakaway than a 2-on-0.

I wish Bridgeport had had an AHL team when I was growing up there.

(6,278 posts)Of course, one would have to figure out the rules for something like that... but obviously it's a lot easier to stop one guy than two!
Given the actual rules they call was correct, of course.

(64,995 posts)The rule should be changed to prevent this by awading 2 penalty shots. Since penalty shots are made >50% of the time the odds that knocking the net off the pins would actually stop a goal being scored become very low and there is some reasonable chance that such an action results in 2 goals.
That would stop it.

(6,278 posts)I think the ref could have called two penalties on that, delay and unsportsmanlike conduct. Knocking the net off is certainly both a delay and an unsportsmanlike act. A penalty shot plus a power play might also be sufficient deterrent, though less than the deterrent of two penalty shots.

That's pretty good!

(6,278 posts)Usually goalies do not serve their own penalties. And I suppose sometimes a team might be sitting their #1 goalie, in which case this might help them out!
