Reports: Everyone Going to Bitch Until There’s a 64-Team College Football Playoff

According to numerous sources, everyone is just going to whine and bitch and moan until the College Football Playoff is expanded to a 64-team tournament.

“We couldn’t even get through one year with the four-team tournament everyone clamored for without bitching,” said an NCAA source. “People are saying: ‘We need to expand to an eight-team playoff to make sure no deserving teams are excluded. Riiiiiight. That won’t make them happy. Then they’ll bitch the 9th-ranked team is getting screwed, then the 17th-ranked team, then the 33rd-ranked team, and so on and so on. People are the worst.”

Mississippi State, Oregon, Florida State and TCU lead the latest College Football Playoff rankings, with fans of Alabama, Arizona State, Baylor and Ohio State claiming they deserve to be in the four-team field.

SEC commissioner Mike Slive said he doesn’t support a large playoff, but said the current system isn’t fair.

“The fact that there is currently only one SEC team in the four-team field is laughable,” said he said. “If an expanded playoff would allow every deserving SEC team to get into the playoff — and all SEC teams are deserving, in my opinion — I’d be all for it. Let’s do it.”

NCAA officials have reportedly already contacted Dayton about hosting NCAA Football Tournament play-in games in the city in mid-December 2017.

“Sixty-eight teams is the only way to do it,” said Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany. “That would get us four or maybe even five teams in the field. That would be great. Getting a play-in game in Dayton against someone like Wyoming would be huge for a program like Michigan.”

It won't matter if they end up losing a game if they're in the top 4 now. If they win out, they're in.

I'm more concerned about the human element of a selection committee but if they win out & defeat Oregon, they're in. Plus the Egg & Iron bowl will shake things up.

And it fits the powers of two rule we seem to have for playoffs.

There are now 126 FBS teams. Add two more to make 128 (a power of two).

Divide them into 16 conferences with 8 teams each (more powers of two). Notre Dame and Army would finally have to join one.

Have no conference championship games (I hate them because the two teams may have played each other already).

There are now about 35 bowl games - way too many. Have 15 instead. Like this:
1) 8 1st round bowls between the conference champions.
2) 4 2nd round bowls
3) 2 semifinal bowls
4) 1 championship bowl

So to win the championship a team would have to play 2 more games than now. It would be worth it to the team and players. Maybe cut the regular season down a couple of games.

It would likely be easier to drop 2 existing conferences rather than inventing 6 more. Use the Rose/Sugar/Fiesta/Orange bowls to host the first round. The other bowls could be left alone or gotten rid of.

Because a team can't play all the other 15 teams in one season. I really hate the conference championship games because (in addition to what I said) a team with a much poorer record could beat a team with a much better record.

What really needs to be done is to split FBS into 2 complete leagues. That way the dead weight can be gotten rid of. Or at the least move some teams down to FCS or Div-II.

anyway... and they don't deserve to be national champs in the first place if they are ranked that low. Sure, you can probably give an example of some low ranked team beating a #1 team, but not in the BIG game.
