Free-agent running back LeGarrette Blount, who was released by the Pittsburgh Steelers on Tuesday, agreed Thursday to a two-year deal with the New England Patriots for the veteran minimum plus incentives, according to a source.
The running back was in New England early Thursday morning, a source told ESPN's Josina Anderson. The deal reunites Blount with the team for whom he rushed for nearly 800 yards in 2013 before signing a two-year, $3.85 million deal with the Steelers in March.
The 247-pound Blount joins a Patriots running back group that includes overnight sensation Jonas Gray (who rushed for 201 yards against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday night), Brandon Bolden, pass-catching specialist Shane Vereen and rookie James White.
While Blount could help the Patriots this year, there is also an aspect of looking to the future, as running backs Stevan Ridley (on injured reserve with a torn ACL), Vereen and Bolden are all scheduled for free agency after the season.
he Steelers waived Blount less than 24 hours after he left the field before the end of the 27-24 win over the Titans because the fifth-year veteran was upset he did not receive any carries in the game. He went unclaimed on waivers.

Works out well for both parties, he is released from a team who stopped handing him the ball. He goes back to the team where he had his best season which made him the major free agent acquisition for the Steelers.
Though he will be moving into a crowded backfield, wonder what led to his diminished value from the Steelers POV and what value the Patriots still see in him.

(17,086 posts)Knows their system and they know him. The only question is did LB maneuver his way back by design by getting the Steelers to release him, or is BB just taking advantage of the situation?

(64,852 posts)Just luck for him and for NE. They got a guy back they were displeased with without competing with free agent dollars, he lands on his feet because he keeps the guarantee money and still has a gig, and the Steelers get rid a guy they no lnnger wanted.
Triple win.

(17,086 posts)But the Pats weren't displeased with him and made him an offer to return. He knew they had interest at least. The way he left the Steelers gave him some certitude that he would clear waivers through the league.
Then he had to wait and see if the Pats would sign him cheap. Not a good move financially - he should have just stayed quietly with the Steelers - but who knows what he was thinking?

(64,852 posts)Are you accusing the Pats of tampering? If so, that seems like it requires evidence.
How would he know the Pats were interested when he was still a member of another team?
Maybe he's just a punk and works better in BB's structure so he's less of a punk there.
Also, maybe he responds to Brady's leadership style better because Ben is just a big doofus frat boy too.

(17,086 posts)These guys are smart enough to work the system. As hughee99 says, this could even work to his advantage financially. It's funny how things play out sometimes. We'll have to see what the script is on this one - redemption, rivalry, hubris? Stay tuned.

(16,113 posts)He got more guaranteed money (950K) than the Pats were offering in the offseason (which he gets to keep) and a contract with incentives that may end up being as much as he would have made for the Steelers anyway (though I'd have to see what the incentives were first).
He had no shot at making any incentives with the Pittsburgh, since he wasn't getting enough carries. He should get more carries in NE, since they tend to run by committee more than using a "feature back" like Bell.
