Doug was one of the good guys. I have an autograph of his from when i was 12 to 14 y/o, and he played for the Bears. (Sometime late 60's, i think it was.)

He came to the KofC hall my dad used to go to for a "smoker". Talked about the Bears and they weren't very good then. He was funny about that. He wasn't proud that the team stunk, but wasn't ashamed either.

He was really friendly with the kids who were there.

When he saw me get to the table for his autograph, he looked at my slight frame and said, "you must be a basketball player." I told him "yeah, i'd get killed trying to play football."

I saw him play against the Falcons when I lived near Atlanta. He was an underrated linebacker with very little pub because Butkus got all the headlines and media attention.
