The California Assembly passed a bill Monday that would ban public schools from using Redskins as a mascot.
Assemblyman Luis Alejo, D-Watsonville, said the use of the R-word as a team mascot is derogatory and unacceptable, and that the four remaining high schools in the state that continue to use the controversial name should be required to make a change....
The four public high schools in the state using Redskins as a mascot are Gustine High School in Merced County, Calaveras High School in Calaveras County, Chowchilla Union High School in Madera County and Tulare Union High School in Tulare County....
The 2002 bill, which was authored by Jackie Goldberg, a then-Assemblywoman from Los Angeles, failed in the Legislature. Goldberg narrowed the bill to ban only the use of Redskins, which the Legislature passed in 2004. However, then-Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed that bill, saying decisions regarding athletic team names, nicknames or mascots should be retained at the local level.
