New Astros owner mulls name change

HOUSTON -- New Houston Astros owner Jim Crane is considering changing the name of the franchise as well as its uniforms.

Crane said Monday the team will conduct a study to decide whether or not to switch the name.

"We're going to study the information both from the fans and from all sorts of marketing people," Crane said. "I'm not saying we're going to change. We haven't made the decision yet whether we're going to change."

The team was established in 1962 as the Colt .45s and has been called the Astros since 1965 when it was changed to coincide with the move to the Astrodome.

I was sad to see it go. Anyways i think a change in uniforms is a good idea as long as they call for a classic look and i don't mean an Astros classic look. Something like the Cubs.

"and i don't mean an Astros classic look" oh, ok.

My sons call the "Rays", the "Jesus Rays", now.

It's kind of a blah color scheme with the maroon and gray. I vote for Green and Gold.

I'm kidding but that was the top vote getter on the blog. Some want to bring the "Oiler" name back...even if it isn't football.

I don't think they should change it, but if they have to I have great ideas. How about the Houston Bums? Houston Hound Dogs (w/Elvis logo). Houston Horned Frogs (too close to TCU?). Or maybe go back to the Colt 45's with Billy D. Williams pictures everywhere.

It's funny, because, when the Oilers moved to Tennessee...I thought "Tennessee Hound Dogs" would make a terrific name.

after the original name of its current home.

edit: On second thought, there's already an MLB team (the Dodgers) that can't make payroll.

They're already fielding a AAA lineup, they might as well use the name of their AAA team too.

The Round Rock Express is the Texas Rangers' AAA team and is owned by Ryan.
