(64,999 posts)The vote hasn't taken place. The voters are human beings. They cannot "unsee" what they just saw. The ace of the 3rd place team threw a CG/shutout in the ballpark of the 2nd best team. Hard to forget that when voting, other than the fact the Grenke is ESPN's darling.

(16,113 posts)Other than the Cards, the most recent team to win the WS is Toronto more than 20 years ago, and they haven't even made the playoffs since.
I can't bring myself to root for the Cards (because of their more recent success), the Mets (only because they're from NY) or LA because of their massive payroll (which isn't really an issue for me, but there's so many better options this year).
The Cubs are the obvious sentimental favorite for anyone not already fans of one of the other teams, or predisposed to hate them. I'd be fine with any of the AL teams winning, or the Cubs. Personally, I guess I'm pulling for a Cubs-Astros WS, but I suspect it's going to be Toronto-Cards. In any case, there should be a lot of good baseball ahead.
For my Red Sox, at least they finished the year looking much better than they started it, and they have a lot of good young talent that should make the next few years more fun to watch.

(10,893 posts)if they pull an '04 Red Sox move by beating the NL's (unofficial) version of the Evil Empire, and eventually go on to play in and win the WS after so many decades. And this isn't a knock on the Cubs, but TV executives are probably salivating over that possibility right now.

(64,999 posts)Astros/Cubs would be what the TV folks want. Two huge markets both with long droughts before being the playoffs. And both teams have a reasonably large national following.

(10,893 posts)the Astros have a large following after all the games I see where their stadium is mostly empty, but you have a point. Probably many fans outside of STL and LA are sick of seeing these usual suspects stick around in the playoffs every year. Both the Cubs and Astros would provide good "started from the bottom now we here" stories, and even other teams like the Blue Jays are fairly easy to pull for.

(64,999 posts)But, big city teams typically have followings outside their market as fans move away to other locations. Then, they're not there to attend the games but they're still following the team.
Besides, there are never empty seats at the World Series, so the big market advertising appeal will still be there for the TV people.

(64,999 posts)There's hardly anybody alive on the planet who was here when they last won a title. Geez, you have to be 70 just to remember them PLAYING in a world series.
Now, they're going to win after Santo and Banks have died. If they win it all, it will be bittersweet for those of us who remember those great late 60's/early 70's teams that just weren't quite good enough for the Mets, Cards, or Reds.

(64,999 posts)I'm 59 and they've only been good about 15 seasons in my life. 1968 to 1973. Then 1979. Then from 1984 to 1989 (with one pretty down year), then a couple seasons in the 90's, once in the oughts, and now.
Not exactly the kind of thing a front running fan roots for. We Cubs fans are kind of pathetic wretches.
