NFL will help 49ers pay for new stadium in Santa Clara

nfl.com / 2-2-12

INDIANAPOLIS -- The NFL has approved a decision to loan $200 million to the San Francisco 49ers to help finance a new stadium in Santa Clara, Calif., where the team's headquarters are located.

Team president and CEO Jed York said the construction timeline -- which was part of the proposal to the NFL -- projects that the stadium will be built by 2015, but added that the stadium could be done by 2014.

"With the NFL's muscle now behind the new stadium, we are moving forward," York said in a release issued by the team. "I expect an official ground-breaking ceremony very soon. Get your hard hats ready; we are embarking on the path to the next generation of 49ers football."

This ends any and all hopes of building a stadium within San Francisco city limits. To ex-mayors Willie Brown, Gavin Newsome, and all who served as Supervisors: you had years to create a viable city option and you dropped the ball, big time. Public servants? Try public asswipes. As for ex-owner John York, take your ego and shove it up your ass.

So the city did the right thing and didn't succumb to the NFL's theft of tax dollars, and you're mad about it?

San Francisco voters approved $100 million in spending back in 1997, so it wasn't exactly theft.

In some way, I suppose, it puts all doubts to rest about the team moving outside the Bay Area, and that's good. But Santa Clara?

If they're foolish enough to waste their money on it, so be it. Alas, it's ridiculous that cities are so foolish that they let professional sports leagues scam them this way.
