BOSTON -- The Red Sox avoided arbitration with David Ortiz just hours before a scheduled hearing in Florida, agreeing to terms with the star slugger on a one-year deal, Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington announced Monday.

That figure is the midpoint of what the Red Sox submitted ($12.65 million) and what Ortiz's camp requested ($16.5 million). Last season, Ortiz earned $12.5 million.
Ortiz, a seven-time All-Star, is entering his 10th season with the Red Sox.
He will again be a centerpiece in Boston's batting order and had a solid 2011 season, hitting .309 with 29 homers, 96 RBIs and a .953 OPS.

(16,113 posts)Sox don't have a DH in waiting and weren't going to get a better one on the FA market. Ortiz probably wasn't going to get more money from a team that would have also had to give compensation picks (because they offered arbitration). It sounds like they pretty much split the difference on the arbitration.
