Late-game heroics delight Del Rio in Raiders home away from home

Call them the comeback kids. The Raiders and quarterback Derek Carr have overcome seven fourth-quarter deficits this season, most recently in a 19-16 win over the Chargers.

“It’s been a collective effort, I think,” head coach Jack Del Rio said Monday, a day after the Raiders clinched a playoff berth for the first time in 14 years. “The guys have stayed in the fight, and we’ve made plays at the end to give ourselves an opportunity and, in some cases, actually win the game.”

According to TruMedia, the Raiders have outscored opponents 42-0 in the last three minutes of fourth quarters, the best such margin in the NFL.

The defense’s ability to produce in critical moments has been a big part of their success in the fourth quarter and in the final minutes, Del Rio said. “The coverage has been a little better and the rush has been a little better. You add it up, and it’s been able to help us come up with some key stops.”

The Raiders didn’t exactly paint a masterpiece in San Diego. For one thing, they were officially 1-for-7 on touchdowns in the red zone. It was really 1-for-6, Del Rio believes, taking into account a triumphal kneel-down at the end.
