CBS announcer Verne Lundquist gets smacked in the face with a basketball

Just because CBS announcer Verne Lundquist is calling his 33rd NCAA Tournament doesn’t mean he can’t be taken by surprise.

Prior to Saturday’s match-up between No. 4 seed West Virginia and No 5 seed Notre Dame, a loose ball made its way to the broadcast desk and blasted the 76-year-old broadcaster in the face.

Later in the broadcast, Lundquist joked about the incident with his broadcast partner, Jim Spanarkel.

“That hurts on replay,” Lundquist said. “It’s a tougher sport than I thought.”
