Anyone here willing to make a case for keeping Goodell around? Who would you like to see replace him?
"You don't get to have this many messes over the years like Roger has had and survive it," said one owner on the call.
The NFL would need 24 owners to approve Goodell's ouster, and owners are skeptical that this can get accomplished. But one person involved in this week's conference call compared the NFL's current situation with Goodell to Major League Baseball's situation with Fay Vincent in September 1992, when baseball owners voted 18-9 to force him out, and replace him with Bud Selig.
Whether this group of 17 owners can stop Goodell's extension from being finalized, which many predicted would have been completed this summer, appears unlikely. But there are a group of owners on the call who were unhappy with a wide range of issues regarding the state of the league during Goodell's tenure.

(17,295 posts)among Republican football fans? A full boycott would be in order. I'd love to see those salty tears, but the league would never allow it because of the revenue losses.

(29,322 posts)I can't stand Goddells Republican ass yet I still watch. The NFL will probably promote from within either a lawyer or economist which is probably the main reason Kaepernick wouldn't be considered.

(16,855 posts)Its funny to me that he was the biggest defender of Goodell during the Saints Bountygate, which was an overblown response to the CTE epidemic, and the ridiculous Deflategate Patriots drama....newsflash, it was raining and cold as hell that night and balls lose pressure, plus Tom likes his balls on the lower end of the leagues pressure limits, no different than Aaron Rogers admitting, on air, he likes his just above the limit...nevermind the fact that the Pats asswhipping of the colts that night didnt get rolling until the second half when the balls were all appropriately aired...oh Jerrah was the biggest cheerleader of Roger during those scandals, but now that his prize running back is under fire from the league and with Goodells response to the anthem protests, Jerrah now thinks Goodell should be replaced??? Thats fucking rich! Fuck Jerry and his overblown sense of importance. Hes the Donald Trump of the league and a sexual assaulter to boot.
As much as I dislike Goodell, if Jerry wants him replaced, put me in Team Goodell.

(1,896 posts)It's a long list, but he's on it.
What I find odd is that 17/32 owners want him gone but probably can't manage it. Not being able to actively fire him with just a bare majority is one thing, but how on earth do you have a system where only a minority want to keep him and he gets a new contract?

(17,295 posts)Jerry Jones threatens to sue NFL if Roger Goodell's contract extension is approved
A team owner and a team executive told Outside the Lines that Jones has hired David Boies, the famed New York lawyer who represented Vice President Al Gore in the deadlocked 2000 presidential election -- and who led the NFL's court case during a dispute over the 2011 collective bargaining agreement negotiations. More recently, Boies defended Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein against sexual assault allegations.

(17,295 posts)A source told ESPN's Adam Schefter that the new contract would be worth $200 million over the life of the contract -- about $40 million annually -- if owners approve all the bonuses and all the incentives are met. The new deal runs through the 2023 season.
