Cleveland inks deal with Carlos Gonzlez

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Many wondered why the Indians didn’t target veteran outfielder Adam Jones, who seemed to check a lot of the Indians’ boxes, when he was on the free-agent market. Now, there might be an answer.

A source confirmed to MLB.com’s Jesse Sanchez that the Indians agreed with outfielder Carlos González on a Minor League contract on Saturday night. The 33-year-old right fielder will make $2 million if he makes Cleveland’s big league roster, plus $1 million in incentives. The club has not confirmed the deal.

There’s been no secret that the Indians lack depth in the outfield. Cleveland named Leonys Martin the starting center fielder at the beginning of camp, but it has yet to make decisions on a left or right fielder.

I like this pick up. Hope he has some bat left.

Ask Juan Pierre, Matt Holiday, Yorvit Torrealba, etc

I agree with others that he is done though.

All his injuries happened while he should have been peeking in his career; he's 33 and, well, he's basically declining. Can he play first base?

I guess he'd be a bench player, maybe DH, but I also imagine the team would just like an experienced vet to have around. Plate discipline of Cleveland batters did not impress in the playoffs last year (IMO). Maybe they could learn something from CarGo.

He's 35, and has been plagued by injuries the last few years, but Damn, he's on fire batting .378. I watched him bat twice in Spring training, and both times were sweet home runs!

Hunter's plate discipline is subject to debate, but both Gonzlez and Pence certainly bring something to the game; I'm hoping both have great seasons.
