Struggling S.F. Giants call up Yastrzemski's grandson

The Giants called up left fielder Mike Yastrzemski, the grandson of Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski, on Saturday, and he'll make his debut against the D-backs. To make room on the roster, outfielder Mac Williamson was designated for assignment.

The 28-year-old was drafted three times: by the Red Sox out of high school in 2009 (36th round), by the Mariners out of Vanderbilt University in '12 (30th round), and then by the Orioles in '13 (14th round). The Orioles traded him to the Giants for pitcher Tyler Herb on March 23 of this year.

Yastrzemski was batting .316 with a 1.090 OPS for Triple-A Sacramento in 2019. His 12 home runs are already three shy of his most in any year as a professional -- he hit 15 across Double-A and Triple-A in '17 in the Orioles' organization.

SNIP

The Giants are looking for more offense in the outfield. Giants outfielders have hit 17 home runs this season, which rank 27th for the fewest at the position. They have a .209 batting average, tied for 27th with the Marlins, and a .335 slugging percentage that is 28th.

He's a lefty -- shit. All I can say is, good luck kid!

Now we'll have to see if Williamson clears waivers (he was out of options). He's had more lives with the Giants than a cat. Bye Mac -- wish you could have found your stroke.

4. 0-3 -- two swinging Ks, one fly out -- and a hit-by-pitch, with one run scored

Sure sounded odd to hear Kuiper call the name "Yastrzemski."

6. His wife and mom said that first strike out is a good omen

Whatever the Hell that means.

Interesting, Yastrzemski's triple A stats match Hunter Pence's 2019 MLB stats almost exactly, and Hunter Pence plays a pretty decent left field.

I'm just saying.

7. Mike Yastrzemsk redeemed himself the next day with a three-hit day

And never mind he was picked off immediately after his first career hit trying to return to first base. Ouch!

Batting .429, baby!

8. Embarrassing, memorable, and one for the books -- all three hits were opposite field

I'll add this too -- it was AWESOME watching a guy going after the ball rather than waiting for the perfect pitch, and, NOT trying to hit it out of the park. A bloop single is still a single on a team that doesn't produce many hits at all. Even Duane Kuiper made mention of this. I hope Yaz2 keeps it up.

9. A southpaw who can hit opposite field...yet Arizona put on the defensive shift...

for his fourth plate appearance? They didn't shift the first three times? I don't get it.

Oh, I like that Yaz2 tag.

5. Bummer for Mac Willamson. I had great expectations for him when he got called up

But after being called up, he had, like, one spectacular game, his first, then it was a slow decline.
