Read it and weep: Forbes Magazinerates Miami as America's Most Miserable City

2/02/2012

Miami is a playground for the rich and famous. Celebrities flock to parties at South Beach clubs and then return to their $10 million mansions in Miami Beach and Key Biscayne. It’s a leading city in culture, finance and international trade. But away from the glitz and glamor, many ordinary Miamians are struggling.

A crippling housing crisis has cost multitudes of residents their homes and jobs. The metro area has one of the highest violent crime rates in the country and workers face lengthy daily commutes. Add it all up and Miami takes the top spot in our ranking of America’s Most Miserable Cities.

The most famous way to gauge misery is the Misery Index developed by economist Arthur Okun in the 1960s, which combines unemployment and inflation. Our take on misery is based on the things that people complain about on a regular basis.

We looked at 10 factors for the 200 largest metro areas and divisions in the U.S. Some are serious, like violent crime, unemployment rates, foreclosures, taxes (income and property), home prices and political corruption. Other factors we included are less weighty, like commute times, weather and how the area’s pro sports teams did. While sports, commuting and weather can be considered trivial by many, they can be the determining factor in the level of misery for a significant number of people. One tweak to this year’s list: we swapped out sales tax rates for property tax rates. Miami would have finished No. 1 under the old methodology as well.

"Miami residents were further outraged by the city and county covering 80% of the cost of the Florida Marlins $634 million stadium set to open in April despite the Marlins turning fat profits in recent years."

He's now so obsessed with the City of Miami that he has to keep posting anything.

Who would accept the word of Forbes Magazine on anything by the way??

Check how many threads he's got running regarding Miami..the Marlins...etc.

Let me just say that I love Denver...my Dad lived there for years and I've visited a 100 times. Colorado is one of the most beautiful states in the country and I've torn up pretty much all their ski slopes. If you haven't night skied in Keystone ....you ain't done shit as far as I'm concerned.

Now I'm from Miami...born and raised.... don't live there anymore...Orlando .... but I still go down for the sports, the horse tracks etc..

It is absolutely one of the funnest place to party on earth.

Sure it has its problems.... but that certainly goes away when you're watching beautiful Latin women doing the tango on a bar stool.

So...there you have it.... Denver great...Miami... well its fucking Miami.

I know that unemployment was high and foreclosures were up but haven't heard anything about that recently. It is miserable being surrounded by pukes who try to find any possible way they can relax gun restrictions(like bars & schools) but they treat cannabis users like hardened criminals.

I should address this more to trumad and Rockafowler, but you asked the question.

Miami represents all that is bad with America. They don't give a shit down there. Trumad said the problems go away when you watch "beautiful Latin women doing the tango on a bar stool." and "Miami... well its fucking Miami." The Marlins are a great example of this lack-of-caring attitude. The people allowed a known con-artist to talk his way into building an overly ornate stadium at the expense of people who are still in the midst of the Great Recession. They must not care, or they would have voted everyone out, not just the mayor. And the irony is that the fans don't even care an ounce of piss about baseball.

And it's not just Miami. West Palm Beach came in fourth and Fort Lauderdale seventh. What the hell is wrong with Florida?

Yes, I hold a big grudge against Florida (and Sandra Day O'Connor) for giving the 2000 election to that murdering bastard. But after all this time I feel more sorry for Floridians than angry. Why can't they get off their lazy party-going butts and do something to stop all the corruption, crime and income inequality?

"The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game: it's a part of our past, Ray. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again. Oh... people will come Ray. People will most definitely come."
