In the East we have only the beautiful Ruby-throated. The Western part of the country has such a great variety!

Not complaining about the Ruby- throated--I want to make that clear. A pot of red salvia goes out every April to let me know when the boys arrive to establish their territory.

Even though theoretically get 15 most of them are only really on the border and don't get to Phoenix. Ironically the Ruby-throated is one we don't get! I've seen the 3 most common in Phoenix - Anna's, Black-chinned, and Costa's. When I converted my yard to 1/2 desert landscaping I picked plants to attract hummingbirds and butterflies. I have something which attracts hummingbirds in flower pretty much all year: aloe, milkweed, bird of paradise, fairy duster, yucca, palo verde, penstemon, prickly pear, honeysuckle, lantana, bougainvillea, and jacaranda. Most times of the year we just see the Anna's but for the past two springs we've had a resident Black-chinned, which I'm loving.

Wide variety of plants as well as wide variety of hummers. I'm a strong believer in planting the natives--getting rid of our fetish for the GREEN LAWN!

My yard is the envy of the neighborhood! Should be - I paid enough for it I do have lawn but only about 1/2.

As it happens, I was just out taking pictures of the yard this am to do a before/after morph. Here are the after:

When I was out there a hummingbird started feeding about 2 feet from my head! I actually had to zoom out my 250mm lens to get a picture - it was that close to me!:

I love my yard!
