After closing up my brother's camp for the winter, we decided to take one last canoe paddle before putting it in storage.
Gorgeous sunrise.
On our way back were heard some Canada geese - and they were accompanied by some larger long-necked birds.
We didn't have binocs and really couldn't tell what they were - until they started calling - Sandhill Cranes!
They are very rare in Maine although they have regular sightings throughout the state.
The pair of cranes circled us for several minutes calling, and it almost seemed they were going to land in the marsh - but circled out with the geese.
My first Maine Crane.
Finest Kind.

(14,144 posts)Saw my first Sandhill crane up by Lake Auburn in a tributary that feeds into the lake. It was in some tall water grass a distance from the road. Seemed to be alone but the grass was so high the mate could have been off feeding near by.
Lots of birds coming and going. You can hear the calls as a "V" formation of a group of large birds goes flying by.
An American Bald Eagle lives in a clump of huge pines over by the river with a nest way up top the tall - tall pines. You can see the huge nest way up top. We go up to the river with binoculars and it is fun watching them dive and feed on the fish in the river during feeding time.

(24 posts)Stupid Michigan Republicans want to make it legal to hunt Sandhill cranes.
Its terrible, like they dont have enough living things to kill.

(3,283 posts)First Mourning Doves, then the Sandhills. Nothing is safe from the joy of killing.
