The NFL is covered in pink, but only a sliver of sales goes to breast cancer research

Everywhere you looked at the game, you saw pink shoes, pink ribbons, pink wristbands and -- surprise! -- pink merchandise for sale. It's all part of the NFL's breast-cancer awareness campaign.

The pink takeover of the National Football League continued Thursday night as the New England Patriots take on the New York Jets.

Everywhere you looked at the game, you saw pink shoes, pink ribbons, pink wristbands and -- surprise! -- pink merchandise for sale. It's all part of the NFL's breast-cancer awareness campaign.

But if you think buying a $26.95 pink-lined Patriots hat means $26.95 toward the fight against breast cancer, think again. About 12.5 percent of the sales price of NFL-branded "pink" products typically goes to charity, according to NFL spokeswoman Clare Graff. In the case of the hat, that would be $3.37.

Keep in mind the NFL is still a for-profit corporation (for the profits of the team owners). How many other organizations give even remotely this much.
