Because Alabama didn't deserve to be in the playoffs even if they won. They underrate 1 loss or undefeated but always gives Alabama that best spot. I prefer the BCS era over this.

9. What happened to the idea of an 8 team playoff format?

It is a lot less convincing to argue that a team should be number 8 instead of number 9 over arguing number 4 versus 5. I no longer watch the D1 college playoffs because of the four team format, they should have a big field playoff and use the bowls, only the top 4 teams get to play their first game at home, after that, all games are played in bowls.
