Roller Coaster Tycoon 3

Hello fellow tycoons and amusement park lovers,

For more than ten years now I have been playing the RCT series of games, I never get tired of it.

And, for those unfamiliar, it is a game where you design and build your own amusement parks full of thrill rides, food stalls and rollercoasters you design and build piece by piece.

You build and control just about every aspect of it, from setting the price on your new super colossal rollercoaster to the price of extra pickles on a hamburger. (Oh, and you can use the zoom function at the image host for a more immersive experience.)

There are a large number of custom scenery sets available, it's like getting another expansion pack for free!

So, let me show you some of my builds, and if anyone has screens of RCT or other pertinent games, please post them here.

We have themed rollercoasters...

And even skyscrapers, I don't just build an amusement park, I shoot for a whole community, lol

It's been a fun and challenging experience, I still play it almost every day.

Grandpa had his train set in the basement, I've got my RCT-3!

Yes, instead of just having stalls, I build restaurants around them.

Glad you're still getting so much out of a 14 year old game, that's awesome. I'm too much of a graphics nerd to play anything that graphically-outdated-looking at this point.

Now, I've busted out the original Far Cry and Half-Life 2 (and the Episodes) many times over the years and can still enjoy them esp. with mods ... and while those were circa 2004 games like RCT3, they were cutting-edge DX9 at the time ... those shots look like that game was probably DX8 ... looks just a tad better than original Deus Ex quality which was 2001 I think.

I know, snobby of me and while I love the IDEA of loving games just for the game ... meh ... they have to also look cool to me, I admit it

This relatively recent game looks tolerably good (though I still think it's a bit shoddy graphics for a PC game from 2017 ... it's probably like this cause you can build a ginormous park and they want people with potato computers to at least be able to run it) ... I could see maybe getting into this one. Maybe check out the trailer if you'd not seen it already. Maybe it's time to move into the current decade

I've known about Planet Coaster for a long time, now, if only I had enough money for a new computer so I could run it.

Sorry the graphics aren't up to your standards.

It's not always about having the latest and greatest game software, but how much you do with what you have to work with.

There will always be a more advanced system coming out.

But, let's see your screen shots, you must have some awesome builds, huh?

Let's see what you have.

Thx

and not worrying about the graphics.

Just sayin', me personally, I get a lot of my joy playing games from how good they look. I'm into building PC's (though mines long in the tooth at this point ... it's a 1st Generation I7 overclocked Xenon with 6-cores (12 w/hyperthreading) so it's a strong enough platform still) and have managed to scrape up enough to replace my GPU with a good mid-range card every 2-3 years which keeps me running most games on high to very high settings. Squeezing out all the perf I can is a bit of a hobby, and so getting an image that looks really cool is a goal.

That's just me ... and no I've no builds ... I mostly play FPS (single player stuff, not into running around shooting other people with the kiddies ... though I like Co-Op stuff like Borderlands) and action RPG's like Grim Dawn, Diablo, Titan Quest, etc. Don't have any Coaster games.

You could probably buy a used desktop PC strong enough to run Planet Coaster (and most other newer games) off of someone in need of a quick buck for probably $150-175 ... it doesn't take THAT much juice esp. if you're willing to play with lower settings until you can afford a nicer GPU than you'd find at that price. Just throwing it out there.

Anyways, Happy Tycooning!

Thx

when I see some of the things people are doing with Planet Coaster.

(which is made by the same company that makes rct-3: Frontier.)

And it has been a long time in development!

I might get a new graphics card and do okay with it, but I'm about due for a new system anyway.

The worst part about rct-3 graphics-wise are the peeps... they look like Japanese cartoon characters.

There are also a lot of what I see as defects or just dumb ideas in 3 as well, they waste a lot of software on things that are not needed.

They also could have included some more common sense building pieces, some of the custom sets outshine the game software by a good measure.

And that's one thing about Planet Coaster, I don't believe there has been enough time for much in the way of custom scenery, but it will be fun to find out.

And heck, before rct-3 I spent years playing rct-2...

You didn't see very many people building skyscrapers in rct-2, and don't see that many in 3 either.

You build a big enough game and it can tax a system.

[img][/img]

Especially with custom scenery, for that the system has to go outside the game software into special files.

The above pic was built with about 90% in-game scenery, if much more of that was custom scenery the game would lock-up.

What Proc and GPU are you running? Is it a desktop? How much system RAM? OS? Just curious.

Custom scenery is likely higher texture resolution so you may be running out of System and/or VRAM running too much of it.

One app that's super cool for figuring out what part of your system is bottlenecking you is MSI Afterburner. It's a GPU overclocking app that has an on-screen display feature that shows you of course your GPU clock speeds, but also real-time FPS (like the venerable Fraps), GPU core usage%, GPU memory usage, Per-Core CPU clock-speed and usage %, System RAM usage, and more ... and graphs it all for ya too. It started as RivaTuner which has been round since like 2003, so works at least to some extent with almost all GPU's.

Nice work on the park. About ten years before RC3, I played Theme Park, which was also quite fun.

With your eye for design, you’d probably enjoy Minecraft. It even has rails and rail carts, so you could make rollercoasters if the urge hit you.

It might be an old game, but one can always find new things to build with it, one just has to apply themselves and have a genuine love of building.

Minecraft guys are crazy, lol!

I've been over to the site and dinked around, but never got very proficient with it.

They seem to have a lot more types of building pieces than they had when I checked it out years ago, the only lighting they had back then were torches.

But it's genius what they manage to do with those blocks, very inspiring!

Thx
