I've a funny feeling Arsenal's situation isn't as hopeless as everyone thinks.

I base this on irrational fandom and last year's second leg.

We are for sure going to be missing Ribery and Badstuber, and I haven't heard whether Bastian Schweinsteiger will be fit or not. You guys are for sure without Ramsey, right?

And Walcott, of course. Vermaelen might be back but won't be match fit, and new signing Källström will be out too.

Man, that guy is really frustrating. He's got loads of talent but just cannot get/stay healthy.

Both Javi Martinez and Bastian Schweinsteiger made returns to the lineup today against Hamburg. They might not play the full match against Arsenal, but at the very least they should be lurking ominously on the bench

Wish I'd watched Leverkusen - PSG instead.

And I had such high hopes for this one....

This one wasn't terribly exciting either. Hopefully tomorrow's matches are more interesting!

8. First leg now complete

So far we have:

Schalke 1-6 Real Madrid (second leg to be held in Madrid)
Galatasaray 1-1 Chelski (second leg to be played just this side of a blue and white bus in London)
Zenit 2-4 Dortmund (second leg to be played in Dortmund)
Olympiakos 2-0 ManUre (second leg in Manchester)
Milan 0-1 Atletico Madrid (second leg to be held in Madrid)
Arsenal 0-2 Bayern (second leg to be played in Munich)
Leverkusen 0-4 PSG (second leg in Paris)
Man City 0-2 Barcelona (second leg in Barcelona)

Real, Dortmund, Barcelona, and PSG are likely through. Bayern, Olympiakos, and Atletico Madrid appear to be in good shape. The only really obvious cliff-hanger is going to be held at Stamford Bridge.

As violently ill as it makes me to even think about it, I will be cheering for Didier Drogba next month.

You and me both.

Bayern are through as well. You know it, but you're just afraid to jinx it. Admit it.

I meant to post about the harshness of the red card + penalty punishment but didn't get around to it. I'm not entirely neutral in this discussion.

Bayern aren't through until they have the lead when the ref blows the final whistle next month! After last year's round of 16, and the CL final in 2012 too, I'm not going to say a THING (apart from my dorky IT Crowd reference in the OP ) about anything!

You're totally right about the red card + penalty thing. If anything, Arjen Robben should have been sent off for simulation (and spitting...for shame!). As they say, you can take the footballer out of Chelski...

And just like that, Chelski are through. I'd love it if Bayern drew them and exacted a little revenge!

Gala went out without much of a fight. I don't think they mustered a single shot on goal, even. I'm glad because I want Chelski distracted, but would have preferred a more interesting game than that.

For one brief moment I actually found myself cheering for Man U. and Judas van Persie today. Then I realised what I was doing and I felt dirty all over.
