Catholic bishop of Springfield, IL to do `exorcism` on day governor signs gay marriage bill

http://americablog.com/2013/11/catholic-bishop-springfield-exorcism-day-gay-marriage-becomes-legal-illinois.html

The Catholic bishop of Springfield, Illinois has announced that he will conduct an exorcism on the day that Illinois officially legalizes gay marriages, since “same-sex ‘marriage’ comes from the devil.”

Illinois just passed legislation last week legalizes gay unions.

Marriages in the state won’t begin until June 1, 2014, but the legislation is going to be signed by the governor on November 20, 2013, and that’s when Bishop Thomas John Paprocki plans to exorcise the devil from Illinois, its governor, its legislature, gay people, or someone.

Despite how things may seem, we ARE living in the 21st century. Or so they tell me. But hey, at least the guy is justifying his opposition to marriage equality, quoting some obscure Catholic leader named Jorge Mario Bergogli:

“The Argentine people must face, in the next few weeks, a situation whose result may gravely harm the family. It is the bill on matrimony of persons of the same sex. The identity of the family, and its survival, are in jeopardy here: father, mother, and children. The life of so many children who will be discriminated beforehand due to the lack of human maturity that God willed them to have with a father and a mother is in jeopardy. At stake is the total rejection of God’s law engraved in our hearts. … Let us not be naive: it is not a simple political struggle; it is an intention [which is] destructive of the plan of God. It is not a mere legislative project (this is a mere instrument), but rather a ‘move’ of the father of lies who wishes to confuse and deceive the children of God.”

What's that you say? Jorge is now known as Pope Francis? Who knew??

It's a stunt. The first rule of exorcism is that it is not to be broadcast in the media. rug Nov 2013 #5
There are a lot of possessed people. Possessed by hatred, that is and bishop is one of them. idwiyo Nov 2013 #6

They can't. Dumbledore is gay. rug Nov 2013 #12

Might be a good idea to come dressed as demons to the exorcism. hrmjustin Nov 2013 #14
So he's got no respect for his catholicism, either. Iggo Nov 2013 #16

I've been told that the new pope is a liberal, tolerant guy who is taking the RCC in a new direction!

And how homophobia is not that bad and there are more important problems pope needs to deal with first.

I already know his position on forced birth has a lot of support from so called "left"., it's seems logical they will just ignore his homophobia.

I think dear bishop forgot about "don't judge" and "love your neighbour". Or that according to his own religion Jesus loves everyone.

The second rule is there must be a person possessed.

The prayers for "Supplication and Exorcism Which May Be Used in Particular Circumstances of the Church" are taken from the Appendices to the 2004 Latin edition of the Rite of Exorcism, the introduction to which explains, "The presence of the Devil and other demons appears and exists not only in the tempting or tormenting of persons, but also in the penetration of things and places in a certain manner by their activity, and in various forms of opposition to and persecution of the church. If the diocesan bishop, in particular situations, judges it appropriate to announce gatherings of the faithful for prayer, under the leadership and direction of a priest, elements for arranging a rite of supplication may be taken from (the texts provided in these appendices)." - See more at: http://www.dio.org/communications/press-releases/349-bishop-to-offer-prayers-of-supplication-and-exorcism-in-reparation-for-the-sin-of-same-sex-marriage.html#sthash.R2fVQQtp.dpuf

Maybe they hid that in the Latin edition so only those yearning for the pre-Vatican II days would find it?

But yes, it is a stunt.

But from the press release, he's asserting the canonical authority for this is two sentences in a preface to an appendix.

He's an imbecile.
