Intergenerational Human Rights Teach-in

January 19, 2014
Intergenerational Human Rights Teach-in
1:00pm - 4:00pm / Sanctuary

Scripture says, “They shall beat their swords into plowshares.” Such a radical idea that both the prophets Micah and Isaiah describe it. Take the things that do violence, melt them, and reshape them into the tools that give life. We will do just that, as we invite you to join in celebrating the non-violent legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

We will collectively witness an artist forge a gun into a farm tool during our 11:15 AM worship celebration. Our modern day plowshare will be presented to Mayor Bill de Blasio’s office. Mike Martin of Raw Tools has been transforming weapons into strong visual messages since the Aurora and Newtown shootings.

Martin will continue his work throughout the afternoon as we host an intergenerational human rights teach-in honoring the legacy of King from 1 to 4 PM. Both worship and the first hour of the teach-in will be live streamed at middlechurch.org. Communities around the city and the nation are invited to use our resources to host teach-ins in their communities.

At the teach-in, we will be joined by Broadway and television actor Tituss Burgess (Little Mermaid and 30 Rock), who will sing his composition Love Is an Action, and the Village Chorus for Children and Youth.

If that's not enough, it takes place around the corner from McSorley's.
