I was honored to be part of a historic and joyful event on Saturday, February 8, as an estimated 75,000 to 100,000 North Carolinians streamed into their capital city from all over their state to participate in an historic Moral March on Raleigh.
As they were filling the long street between Shaw University and the Capitol Building, the chair of the state Republican party, Claude Pope, went on television and called the march organizer, Rev. William Barber II, the "de-facto head of the North Carolina Democratic party." He meant it as an insult.
But anyone who attended the Moral March on Raleigh came away with a very strong sense that Reverend Barber is leading a movement that is far more profoundly transformative than politics -- although it could affect politicians of all stripes this year and for years and decades to come.
What I saw in Raleigh is the culmination of state-wide organizing around a "fusion agenda' for progress that is a model for the nation -- and especially for states in the South. This important movement needs and deserves your support -- and you can help them financially here.

(82,333 posts)1. 75,000 to 100,000 marchers? Why doesn't this get more coverage?

(146,218 posts)2. Great question.
I just watched some US news and the top story was about an american surfer who's gone missing in Mexico. Lots of footage of mom crying, but odds are he's just down here having a great time somewhere.

(49,533 posts)6. As long as they stay away from melding the agenda with religion...
it will be a positive and inclusive movement.
So just curious - why post this in the Religion group? It doesn't have anything to do with religion, but with progressive politics.

(82,333 posts)7. Do you object to the name Moral Mondays as well?

(118,270 posts)8. The march was led by Rev. William Barber. About one in every ten arrestees
in the Moral Monday rallies he led last year had some religious leadership position

(49,533 posts)10. And as I said...
As long as they stay away from melding the agenda with religion it will be a positive and inclusive movement.
