Related: About this forum8,000 new instances of child sexual abuse alleged in Milwaukee Archdiocese
Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reporter Annysa Johnson writes that 570 victim-survivors have filed claims in the case, which is currently before U.S. bankruptcy judge Susan V. Kelley.
At a press conference on the federal courthouse steps in Milwaukee, Peter Isley, director of the Survivors Network of Those Abused by Priests said, This is a public safety crisis, a child safety crisis that needs to be investigated. We need to know who they are and where they are. How can there be 8,000 crimes committed by over 100 offenders and there be no accountability?

(198 posts)Growing up in Milwaukee in the 1960's, the sexual abuse of children by Milwaukee Catholic representatives was well known by absolutely everybody. I am not a Catholic, and throughout my childhood from age 5 on, I was told by numerous Catholic friends to stay away from the priests because they were "wierd". The children and parents, as well as the Church, knew this was happening on a more than infrequent basis, and chose to look the other way. The belief seems to have been that only expendable, "different" children, were being used.

What a sorry sack of apologetic horseshit.

This story is two days old. Is that new enough to still be relevant?

(5,881 posts)between the priests and other groups, it seems to me, is the tendency of the group to suppress the existence of such acts, compared to other less cohesive, more individualistic groups, such as teachers.

(1,437 posts)8000 cases of sexual abuse by about 100 teachers and school workers in that time frame.
I find that pill hard to swallow.
Must have been about 8000 cases EACH of firemen, police, doctors, coaches, assistant coaches, professors, scout leaders, dance coaches, rabbis, ministers and government officials. To name a few. Gimme a fuckin' break.

(13,029 posts)Show us a ratio of Catholic priests who were known by their superiors to be rapists, but were transferred to other parishes without informing anyone there of their crimes, to public school teachers who were treated in the same way. And a ratio of cardinals and bishops who knew about rapist priests but did not inform the police, to public school principals who did the same. And a ratio of rapist catholic priests whose superiors decided that their crimes should be dealt with within their organization instead of by the proper civil authorities, to public school teachers who were given the same consideration.
Just for general information purposes.

(13,029 posts)I've already seen lots of evidence for half of those things, and none for the rest. So have you. But hey, try one of those "other ways of knowing" and I'm sure you'll find a way to change all that.
