As Westboro's Fred Phelps lies dying, a reflection on the difference between disagreement and hatred
By CANDACE CHELLEW-HODGE
Hopefully the last picture of Fred Phelps we'll have to run on RD. (And we say this without hatred, just, you know )
A student of mine once asked me: "Have you ever believed in something so completely that you think people who don't agree with you are completely crazy?"
"Yes, of course!" I was quick to answer.
But I realized as I answered that the question came from just such a persona student so different from me that I was not likely to respect him or his views.
Yes, I am a hater.

... be not too hard for soon he'll die
often no wiser than he began
be not too hard for life is short

I've been trying to articulate how I feel about Phelps' death, with little success. She siad it perfectly.
This man wanted us to hate him. Showing him kindness, even in death, is the only rational response for me.

I've been struggling with it as well.
One thing he really craved was attention and I am reluctant to give it to him. But I, like you, really liked the way she put this and wanted to share it.
Glad you enjoyed.
