ASHEVILLE Members of the city school board approved on first reading Monday a new policy regarding religion in the schools.
The policy was not a reaction to any specific incident, but comes in the wake of a state law approved this summer spelling out student rights when it comes to prayer and religious activity at school, according to Cynthia Grady, chief human resources officer and legal counsel for Asheville City Schools.

The city school policy says, The board will neither advance nor inhibit any religion or religious belief, viewpoint, expression or practice.
It is also the policy of the board to support, within the framework of the United States Constitution and the North Carolina Constitution, the free, private exercise of individual religious beliefs by students and school employees, the policy reads.

(11,417 posts)stop someone from praying in school. Generally what religious people want is to demonstrate their religious beliefs in the face of other people such as praying as a group at games or graduation. If you want to pray to your god knock yourself out. But don't make a school function your tabernacle.
