Just read it without the "god said this person is good therefore I assume such" perspective. Rate them on their actions based on your own views of right and wrong. Abraham, Jacob and so on all do horrible things to people and the great good absolutely just god often ends up punishing these people's victims. Even the apologists who say we should pay attention to the lessons taught by the story and not the evil deeds fall flat. What lesson should I learn from Abraham tricking a man into marrying his wife then running away withe dowry while god punishes his victim? The only conclusions I can come to from that one strike me as wrong and evil.
