A former adult movie star, claiming membership in the satirical Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, was allowed to exercise her religious rights by having her Utah drivers license photo taken wearing a colander on her head.
Asia Lemmon, also known as Jessica Steinhauser and previously known in the adult movie industry as Asia Carrera, became the fourth member of the church and the first in Utah to be allowed to wear the headgear in a license photo, reports The Spectrum.
According to the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, the colander is the official headwear of the satirical religious movement that mocks traditional religions, with members calling themselves Pastafarians.
Lemmon, who says she is an atheist, said claiming membership in the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster was a decision shes proud of.

(14,449 posts)Nuns are able to wear habits. The Muslims lose because they want their faces covered. You can still make out who she is even with the strainer on her head.

It all seems really clever until you get on the radio and have to say your name repeatedly in a serious situation.
At any rate, it's her right but it's pretty sophomoric. I guess we can be glad she is wearing something.
And good for the DMV for just letting her do it. Really not worth fighting over.

(146,218 posts)But I can easily imagine some circumstances where one might be asked for a drivers license and it would probably be better if you didn't have a spaghetti strainer on your head.

(1,582 posts)She should probably keep the strainer handy in the car to help prove her identity if needed.

(7,309 posts)I'm guessing Pier 18 or wherever you dock it. No one actually puts any thought in what they name things. Kinda like that church in Santa Claus, Indiana. They just put the name of the town on their church because names don't mean anything, right? That what I get from your statements on that issue. The church meant absolutely nothing by putting that name on their stationary because names don't mean anything. Or did you actually put some thought into what you named your boat?
cbayer
(146,218 posts)It's a native american name, but I'm not going to tell you what it is. Had the name been something we did not like, we would have changed it to something that meant something to us, but this name is pretty special.
Again you show how little you know about boats and boaters. Most people do actually put a lot of thought into the name of their boats. The previous owner of this one certainly did. You will hear a lot of interesting stories when you ask people why their boat has it's particular name. Not that you would ever socialize with the 1%'s like myself that go yachting about, but if you ever do, take the opportunity to ask.
BTW, most people, including us, who go yachting about do spend some time in slips but also spend a lot of time at anchor. So I guess according to you they would name their boat Anchor... or something.
LOL, on the Santa Claus reference. You just can't let that one go, can you?
This is one of the silliest arguments I have ever seen on this site, and I have seen a lot, Edgar.

(7,309 posts)And it represents a very naive way of thinking. People don't name their children One, Two, or Three. Even rivers and mountains have names. Names have meaning. No one just throws letters in front of someone or something. No one except you and a couple of other naive posters here.
cbayer
(146,218 posts)People name their children with their own last name. If their last name is Santiago, they are not naming their child after a saint.
I am not naive, but you have resorted to an ad hom, which means only one thing.
Cartoonist
(7,309 posts)If someone is named Santiago, then you can bet the farm that the Famliy name was named after a Saint. I suppose you think all those kids named Jesus were named after a dashboard statue and not the Son of God.

(146,218 posts)Or maybe I just think you're wrong.
What is most amusing is that you are possibly not a cartoonist, which makes this debate even that more hilarious.
Cartoonist
(7,309 posts)So let me get this straight. You think people put a lot of thought into what they name their boat, but priests don't put any thought into what they name their church.
cbayer
(146,218 posts)Did you miss the part about how this particular church is Methodist and doesn't have any priests? And the part where you were told by several people that Methodists don't recognize saints other than some of Jesus's closest comrades?
And the part about how this town chose it's name because the one it wanted was taken and chose it because they wanted to get mail for santa?
How about the part where there are multiple churches in the town that you grew up in named after the town?
And if you didn't miss all of that, are you seriously continuing to make this ludicrous case that this single church is named after a Saint? A Saint named Claus?
So, let me get this straight. Do you think the song "Santa Baby" was written about a Saint called Baby?
Hey, guess what! There is a church called St. Nicholas in Santa Claus, Indiana. Does that not just blow your mind?
Cartoonist
(7,309 posts)The people who named the church didn't just look at the post office and decided that was what they would call the church. They gave it serious consideration. One of the things they considered, though I am taking your word for it, was they wanted to get mail for Santa. I can accept that. That was my point from the very beginning. Thank you for finally acknowledging it. Now I can sleep easily this Christmas eve while I wait for Santa baby.
cbayer
(146,218 posts)I'm not missing the point. Your point is invalid.
Have you talked to the people at the church, because you seem to know a great deal about them and their thought processes, Edgar.
The TOWN wanted mail from santa, not the church.
Hey! We should write a treatise on the only Methodist church that has named itself after the pet name of a saint that lived 400 years after christ!. We could publish in the Journal of Totally Absurd Hypothesis Thought Up By People Who are Poes!
Your point from the beginning has been a hoax, but it is wearing thin and I think it's time to come up with a new one.
Cartoonist
(7,309 posts)you spoil it all by revealing you still don't get it. You insult the founders of the church by saying they had no choice but to name their church after the name of the town. You insult them by saying they gave no consideration to how others might regard their naming of their church. And ultimately you insult them by saying that people who name their boats Dixie Normous show more forethought than men of God.
cbayer
(146,218 posts)I don't know how I will live with myself. I have disappointed you and revealed that I am not even as marginally intelligent as you thought I was. And I have insulted the founders of this church. My life is completely over!!
And this discussion is also completely over. Find a new schtick.
Wait, I have an idea. Why don't you write one of your famous OP's about this and let's see how it goes? Bet you won't, edgar.
