Newark church members wear hoodies on Palm Sunday as sign of solidarity with Trayvon Martin

NEWARK — Pastor Ronald Slaughter wore his Sunday best, plus a white hoodie sweatshirt as he preached his Palm Sunday sermon today.

Slaughter and members of his congregation at St. James AME Church in Newark donned hoodies in honor of Trayvon Martin, the Florida teen gunned down by a neighborhood watch captain last month ...

On Saturday, marches held in Newark and Plainfield drew more than 200 people at each rally as hoodie-wearing demonstrators called for criminal charges to be brought in the death of the unarmed teen. Martin, 17, was killed March 1 in Sanford, Fla. after being shot by George Zimmerman, 28.

The church spread the word on its website and using social media like Facebook and Twitter, urged members to participate in "Hoodie Sunday" ...

predominantly white churches in the South, particularly in FL, have their membership doing the same.

A hoodie is a practical garment to wear in the rain on a cool day in Florida. There are lots of days like that in February in FL. Going to church in one should be a reasonable way to go.
