Vast majority of U.S. Catholics who left the church can’t imagine returning, study says

http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/acts-of-faith/wp/2015/09/02/the-vast-majority-of-u-s-catholics-who-have-left-the-church-cant-imagine-returning-study-says/

Most Americans who were raised Catholic but have since left the church could not envision themselves returning to it, according to a new Pew Research Center survey examining American Catholics and family life. The survey’s findings were released Wednesday, weeks before Pope Francis makes his first visit to the United States, and as Catholic leadership contends with dramatic demographic shifts.

Seventy-seven percent of those who were raised Catholic but no longer identify with the religion said they could not envision themselves eventually returning to the church, according to the Pew survey. The survey also examined U.S. Catholics’ views on issues such as divorce, same-sex marriage and sinful behavior, finding an openness for non-traditional family structures.

Good for them. I wouldn't want to return to such a bigoted organization either.

But not a whisper in most of the media.

There are good Catholics, it is the bad evangelical Carholics who own the media that are giving them all a bad name.

You will know who to seperate into good and bad when the Pope arrives shortly.

took lots of heat about that. The Pope of course is anti choice and opposed to LGBT rights on the basis that the whole idea of our rights comes from Satan, so he's not a useful metric of good vs bad, he's a mixed bag. The bulk of his views and political agenda are in strong agreement with the Republican Party which is why he was invited by Boehner to speak to the Congress. A few of his views lean toward Democratic ideas, but none of those are views the Pope puts into action they are rhetorical and are not crafted into any sort of policy. They are therefore meaningless when compared to the Republican views Francis has which he most certainly takes action to enforce, taking part in anti equality and anti choice efforts in the US in both word and deed.

Also this 'Catholics own the media' crap is no more true nor savory than the 'Jews own the media' crap.

Because he's the same guy who told American Catholics it was sinful to vote for John Kerry.

He's also a driveling homophobe.

And let's not pretend that his stance on immigration is the natural result of Catholic piety. The Church has a pecuniary interest the matter that, frankly, is kind of hard to overlook.

Without that, the percentage is rather useless.

to receive the poison of the Great Whore of Babylon. Christ NEVER intended to have a church run as a political organization.
Everything the RCC has ever done has been to attain more power for themselves over society.

Please read about the 300,000+ babies that were taken by Catholic hospitals during Franco's reign. The church worked with the fascist government (as usual) to take children away from the opponents of Franco and the church. These "pro-life" thugs decided that non Catholic parents were not good enough to raise their own children.

Priests need to shut their mouths on family matters. They do not marry, do not have kids, and do not have to care for elderly parents. They know jack shit about life. They have been historically oligarch's who get a high off of holding power over others.

When it comes to the RCC, Thomas nast had these SOB's pegged.

Comparing the crimes of the Church to bigotry is like comparing poison to sour milk. Instead of addressing the issue the poster brought up, you addressed the cartoonist.
