HAWKINS, TEXAS Watchful eyes are guarding a controversial sign that welcomes travelers on Jesus' behalf to this East Texas town of 1,320 residents.
"The only incident we had last night was, a skunk walked through," volunteer guard Joe Sabedra quipped Friday morning after he, two youngsters and another adult spent the night on the pie-shaped lot on Hawkins' eastern outskirt.
Sabedra, one of about 15 active members of the Hawkins chapter of the Constitution advocacy group Oath Keepers, said nights have passed peacefully this week as members have guarded a sign reading "Jesus Welcomes You to Hawkins."
The volunteers sit beneath two blue festival canopies, each with a coffee maker. They have a dormitory-style refrigerator, lawn chairs, a clock radio and fans.

A slightly smarter zombie might set out bait and wait for a regular person to stop for the coffee and doughnuts, and then, Bam!, they start biting him, taking out chunks of him here and there until he gives up and becomes one of them. Maybe the reason for so many zombie books and movies is that people have a fear of being sucked into the gravitational pull of one of these cults, which people start in order to enrich themselves and give others 'purpose' in life.

They were sitting out lazily late one night, guarding the town sign -- and then IT HAPPENED! Would anyone live to tell the tale?
Coming soon to a theatre in a nearby county

(16,843 posts)Little towns can get pretty strange. I would put some of these small town freaks up next to big city weirdos anytime. Some people stay in these little towns because they're the smartest people in town, so it's easier to play God and cause havoc. I've got to admit that it would be kind of fun to fuck around with the townsfolk every now and then. If a person can get agnostics and atheists to sit out at night to watch a Jesus sign, I've got to hand it to him/her.
Right to the point.

OTOH this stupid, ridiculous vigil keeps them from causing worse trouble.

And to think I almost bought into the propaganda about badass Jeezus
