Anti-secular Republicans are ignorant of what secularism even means

By James Kirk Wall, Sunday at 4:49 pm

The opposite of an Islamic theocracy is not a Christian theocracy. The opposite of Islamic Sharia Law is secularism.

Misguided Republicans such as Huckabee, Santorum, Cruz, Carson, and Kasich claim that since secularism doesn’t grant special recognition and favoritism towards Christianity, it’s somehow immoral and anti-Christian. They’re confusing not getting everything they want with persecution.

Secularism is very simple. No persecution or special privileges (handouts) based on religious beliefs. It’s not pro-atheism or anti-atheism. It’s not pro-religion, or anti-religion. It’s about individual rights and liberties. It’s about the law applying equally to everyone.

Not being allowed governmental favoritism doesn’t take away anyone’s rights. It simply keeps rights where they are and doesn’t take away the rights of others.

Only a secular fundamentalist would want to keep the majority religion from taking its rightful place in the ruling hierarchy, this is a democracy and majority rules.

2. Religion uses government like a cudgel in the public square.

If religious leaders can't attract sufficient converts who agree with their taboos, then they expect government to force the public into compliance. We have far too many greedy politicians willing to mix government and religion by selling their souls for an alliance to some wealthy and charismatic religious figure for fame and money.

Heedless of anyone else's rights, the religion business now expects, and even demands, "governmental favoritism" to advance their cause. It boils down to money. There isn't any politician alive who is willing to kiss his career goodby by cleaning up the religion industry.

religion is a cunning and unprincipled opponent that will stop at nothing to maintain their power.
