Priest who committed suicide to have Catholic funeral services

http://www.ksat.com/news/priest-who-committed-suicide-to-have-catholic-funeral-services

Elizondo was a once-respected local leader of the Catholic Church. He was accused of sexual abuse and was found dead inside his home Monday. The Bexar County medical examiner ruled his death a suicide. The 80-year-old former rector at San Fernando Cathedral died of a self-inflicted gunshot to the head.

St. Mary's University Assistant Professor of Theology Andrew Getz said recent teachings show those who commit suicide may not be completely free nor completely understand what it is that they're doing.

"Suicide is no longer a mortal sin," Getz said.

Aw, isn't that special? They can decide the rules have changed when a child abuser in their ranks broke them, but god (sic) forbid they allow a gay teacher at one of their schools to marry their partner.

Priorities on full display. Protecting the abusers, abusing everyone else.

What's your option? rug Mar 2016 #3
Have a non-Catholic service. Bury him in a secular cemetery. nichomachus Mar 2016 #4
And if his wishes, or his family's wishes, are for a Catholic funeral? rug Mar 2016 #5

It's astounds me how anyone can view this as a bad thing.

I was just reacting to your silly claim that the only two choices were a Catholic ceremony or tossing him in a landfill. There are other options.

In fact, the church changed the rules about burying suicides a long time ago. This is nothing new.

How the catholic Church has ever viewed giving catholics who commit suicide a proper funeral ceremony and burial in a catholic cemetery if they wished it, as bad things.

that several people are mainly motivated by anti-Catholic bigotry

I count us fortunate indeed that DU is so entirely free of such trolling behavior and other negativism that could feed suspicions like that

Please explain what you mean by that. How is that different from anti-KKK bigotry? I object to the KKK for its racism. I object to the RCC for its homophobia and misogyny. Am I a bigot?

I think you have it backwards. It is the RCC that is the bigot. Those who are anti-RCC are the just.

Among the religionist crowd. Never actually substantiated, but it makes them feel some lame sort of justification.

And we can only imagine what a cesspool DU would be if we had people defending the corruption, violence, hatred, sexism and homophobia promoted by religion. Oh…wait…

It's amusing to see people twist and squirm to to explain how some religious teachings aren't bigotry. Like the Catholic stance on Women in the church, and on homosexuality in general.

You know, if you tell Baby Jesus you're sorry then you get forgiven (*). Now he's up in Heaven with Hitler and Mother Teresa and the rest of them.
