4. Pigs and rennet

The comment about pigs in this cartoon got me wondering.

When I first googled "rennet" I found a Wikipedia article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rennet) explaining how rennet, "a complex of enzymes produced in any mammalian stomach to digest the mother's milk... often used in the production of cheese", is acquired from the stomach lining of cows and other mammals like goats and lambs. There was no mention specifically of pigs.

I googled "rennet pigs"... and that just got me confused. Many Muslims are apparently worried about whether particular cheeses are halal -- which it wouldn't be if it contained any product obtained from a pig. Some people seem to think the use of rennet from pigs is just a myth, or at least very rare.

I also never realized that lacto-vegetarians who don't mind the milking of animals, but who are morally opposed to the slaughter of animals, would have to rules out some cheeses since the rennet used in making these cheeses is obtained from slaughtered animals. (There are plant-based and artificial substitutes for rennet.)
